The mature LCD monitor industry is undergoing improvements to suit the growing demand in gaming and digital entertainment applications. Aside from adding a slew of multimedia functions and external design enhancements to LCD monitors, makers have been releasing widescreen versions. International Data Corp. (IDC) forecasts that the global shipments of LCD monitors will escalate from 130.29 million units in 2006 to 152.57 million units in 2007. Out of these, widescreen LCD monitors are expected to follow the upward trend and account for 8 percent and 12 percent of 2006 and 2007 shipment volume, respectively. By 2010, the LCD monitor industry is expected to ship 47.68 million widescreen LCD monitors, accounting for 25 percent of an estimated volume of 190.72 million LCD monitors.

The transition to widescreen monitors can be attributed to several factors. These include production economies of scale among manufacturers, aggressive pricing in the consumer market, and the launch of Microsoft's Windows Vista. Market analysts and the profiled manufacturers in this report agree that Window Vista, which boasts support for widescreen displays and additional gaming features, compatibility with high-definition TV (HDTV) and updated graphical user interface, is one of the key drivers in the adoption of widescreen LCD monitors.

Mainland China dominates global shipments
Mainland China accounts for more than 70 percent of the global LCD monitor shipments, with widescreen monitors taking an 8 percent share. About 20 LCD monitor makers produced widescreen models in 2006. The supplier base is forecast to jump to 50 as cost of LCD panels decreases and market demand for widescreen units rises. Customs statistics indicated that during the first three quarters of 2006 mainland China exported 65.26 million LCD monitors. Export volume was expected to total 93 million units by the end of 2006. Analysts expect a 15- percent year-on-year growth in 2007.

About 70 of mainland China's 100 LCD monitor makers have set up production facilities in Guangdong province, specifically in the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Other makers are clustered in Beijing and Shanghai, and in the provinces of Jiangsu and Fujian. Shenzhen has the highest number of LCD monitor suppliers or about 50 percent of mainland China's supplier base. Of the 16 profiled mainland China makers in this report, 14 have facilities in Shenzhen, including leading companies such as Great-Wall and Founder. Shenzhen attracts LCD monitor manufacturers with its stable electronic component supply chains and sales networks, and developed communication and transportation logistics. Mainland China exports 80 percent of its widescreen LCD monitor output to key export markets in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East.
