Founded in 1984, Albatron Technology is a state-owned company that has been publicly listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange since 1999. Albatron is a manufacturer of high-end plasma displays, multimedia TVs and monitors, and rear-projection display systems. The company is headquartered in Chungho City in Taipei, Taiwan, while its factory is located in Taoyuan, Taipei. The company caters to both domestic and export markets, but focuses more on exports with 85 percent of output shipped, through the port of Keelung, to overseas destinations. Albatron's key export markets and their percentage shares of output are : Western Europe, 35 percent; North America, 35 percent; the Middle East, 15 percent; and Asia, 15 percent. The domestic market in Taiwan absorbs 15 percent of Albatron's output. Annual sales of all products in 2004 reached US$164 million. Meanwhile, total sales of its color TVs, from both domestic and overseas markets, totaled US$5.25 million. Half of Albatron's output is shipped to OEM buyers, while the remaining 50 percent is sold under the company's own brand. Albatron regularly participates in major trade shows such as CeBIT, CES and Computex to better showcase its products. Manufacturing capability The Global Sources team visited Albatron's 12,000sqm factory in Taoyuan, which houses two production lines and a workforce of 225. In 2004, the company invested US$2.1 million in equipment procurement. To date, the estimated value of machinery and equipment at its factory amounts to about US$500,000. Albatron first produced color TVs in 2003. Most production processes are outsourced, except for surface mounting, PCB sub-assembly and final assembly which are either done inhouse or outside the factory. Cosmetic design, QC and R&D are mainly done in-house. Monthly in-house capacity for color TVs is 3,200 units, while average monthly production is currently pegged at 600 units. The company produced a total of 3,500 color TVs in 2004 valued at US$5.25 million. In volume terms, exports of color TVs reached 2,900 units last year with an export value of US$4.5 million.
