China's manufacture of digital still cameras continues to gain momentum, with a forecast year-on-year growth of 27 percent in 2007, equivalent to total production exceeding 80 million units.

China's shipments, which added up close to 67 million units in 2006, accounted for 73 percent of worldwide production.

The industry's output comes mostly from digital still camera leaders such as Canon, Olympus and Sony, which have factories in mainland China, and from their EMS providers. According to estimates, their production represents more than 90 percent of the country's total output. The rest is accounted for by small- and medium-scale operators that include wholly owned domestic companies and Hong Kong- and Taiwan-invested manufacturers.

Because the domestic market is saturated with global brands, these small- and medium-scale makers are intensifying their marketing efforts in overseas markets, mainly Europe and the United States. Although their output consists mostly of 3MP and below digital still cameras, it is 5MP and above models that lead exported products.

The following are some of the key trends we see in China's digital still camera industry:
The supplier base will shrink from 40 makers to 30 by the end of 2007 due to competition from major players operating in China and other product lines, such as camera mobile phones.
Exports will increase by at least 10 percent in the next 12 months as suppliers move away from the domestic market dominated by leading global players and target niche markets overseas.
The majority of makers are upgrading their manufacturing facilities to boost their production capacities by at least 20 percent in the next 12 months.
Product development efforts will be sustained and focused on higher resolution, multi-functionality, larger displays and slimmer form factors.
Price forecasts vary with many makers projecting up to 15 percent increase, while others expecting a reduction. Some suppliers will keep prices stable.

This report covers the three major categories of digital still cameras produced in China: below 2MP, 2MP to 4MP, and 5MP and above.

Models that adopt CMOS image sensors with 3MP and below resolution ratings dominate the output of mainland China suppliers. Higher resolution models from 3MP to 7MP usually incorporate a choice of CMOS or CCD image sensors, and are produced mostly by Hong Kong- and Taiwan-invested companies.

The Products & Prices section in this report details the features and price ranges of digital still cameras made in China. The Industry Overview elaborates on the industry composition, highlighting key characteristics of the different types of suppliers, primarily wholly owned domestic enterprises and joint ventures with Hong Kong and Taiwan investors.
